Prostate cancer (Screening)
Prostate Cancer Screening
A recent published study concluded "After
20 years of follow-up the rate of death from prostate cancer did not differ
significantly between men in the screening group and those in the control
group".
In the United States, the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the PSA test for annual screening of prostate
cancer in men of age 50 and older. The patient needs to be informed of the
risks and benefits of PSA testing prior to performing the test. PSA levels
between 4 and 10 ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter) are considered to be
suspicious and consideration should be given to confirming the abnormal PSA
with a repeat test. If indicated, prostate biopsy is performed to obtain
tissue sample for histopathological analysis.
