Prostate is a male sex
gland about the size of a WALNUT. It surrounds the urethra at the point where
it leaves the bladder. During the long years of life, harmless nodules develop
in the tissues. These accumulate and gradually enlarge the gland. The problem
arises only when the gland STARTS COMPRESSING THE URETHRA, and impedes the flow
of urine.
Symptoms of Prostate
Enlargement: - Weak urine stream,
Difficulty starting urination, ON AND OFF FLOW while urinating, dribbling at
the end of urination, Increased frequency of urination, retrograde ejaculation
and urgent need to urinate.

Non-surgical treatment for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) - Prostatic
Artery Embolization (PAE) is comparable to TURP/laser surgery in
recovery OF the symptoms. The PAE requires ONLY one night hospitalization
and is performed under
local anesthesia. By right femoral artery, initially pelvic angiography is
performed to evaluate the prostatic arteries. Then, an angiography catheter is
introduced to catheterize the prostatic vessels. For embolization, PVA
particles are used which causes slow flow or near-stasis in the prostatic
vessels THEREBY INTERRUPTING the arterial flow. IN DUE COURSE, THIS REDUCED
BLOOD SUPPLY CAUSE SHRINKING OF THE GLAND THEREBY RELEIVING THE SYMPTOMS.
Advantages of PAE: - 1. It does not produce the side effects that TURP does and makes
for faster recovery. 2. Performed on any size of enlarged prostate 3. Need just
small nick around the skin in the groin region. 4. No sexual dysfunction after
prostatic artery embolization and a quarter of patients report that sexual
function improved after the procedure.5. NO general anesthesia / No blood loss.
6. No surgical ugly scars and makes for faster recovery with 98% success rate.
